Xiamen, China. 2007.10.29 - Only the most intrepid of DPs would accept the challenge of shooting aerials, not in a modern, swift, dual-engined helicopter, but an ancient biplane!
Laurie Gilbert of
L'Image Cinematography is certainly an intrepid aerial cinematographer. His resume includes shooting film, video and photographic stills from all types of aerial camera platform from balloons to supersonic jets. So when he was told that the helicopter he had been promised in Xiamen, China was not available, and in its place, was offered a 1947 built Antonov biplane, Laurie accepted this with relative alacrity, and set about designing a mechanism which would minimise camera vibration.
For the Transcontinental Challenge, Laurie shot with a handheld motion picture camera while harnessed to the outside of the balloon, to enable him to capture high angle perspectives of the gondola and the passing landscape! For the Turkish Air Force, he underwent rigorous training to withstand centrifugal forces of up to 8G, which he later experienced in the jet fighter aerobatics, while simultaneously capturing highly usable footage.
Over a period of 20 years, Andrew W Morse of Digital Tsunami has worked with Laurie on a diversity of film projects from yacht racing at the America's Cup and Etchells' World's, (successful) advertising agency new business pitches for major accounts and films of animals in Taronga Park and Dubbo Zoo.
Digital Tsunami has designed, developed and hosted the web presence of L'Image since 1998. The innovative iFrames structure of the current site enabled comprehensive content in an efficient and compact footprint. Randomised images, succinct image captions and searchable projects make this an outstanding site in comparison with the vast majority of cinematographers around the world.
Laurie has recouped his capital investment many times over. A single phone call from a New York Producer generated absolute ROI as the project on which Laurie was commissioned, paid for the site development immediately.
