Qingdao, China. 2008.8.24 - Specialist helicopter aerial cameraman, Laurie K. Gilbert, the director of Aerial Marine, has completed filming the sailing events at the Beijing Olympics.
Film production company Aerial Marine Media Sdn. Bhd., was registered in July 2008 and its' first official project outside Malaysia was television coverage of the Olympic Sailing Regatta.
Gilbert was invited by the host broadcasters of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games to bring his offshore marine television cinematography skills to the Qingdao venue of the Olympic Sailing Regatta. He joined the specialist camera teams generating dynamic imagery for the global, nightly television package. Gilbert and two European cameramen originated all the aerial footage.
Operating in two Chinese military helicopters, flown by Chinese Air Force flight crew, the three cameramen shot with Cineflex and Scorpio gyro stabilised, High Definition camera systems which were mounted on the outside of the aircraft.
The most challenging of all the Olympic sports to televise live, the yacht races were covered by the helicopter camera teams which flew several times each day.
The helicopters regular departures and arrivals were watched by a large and enthusiastic audience of local and international visitors standing on the Qingdao breakwater.
Gilbert is no stranger to Olympic Sailing - in 1988 he led a team of five Australian specialist sailing cameramen to Pusan, Korea, where they were responsible for shooting the inaugural global television coverage of an Olympic Sailing Regatta.
For more than 20 years, Gilbert has filmed prestigious sailing regattas around the globe, including the America's Cup, Transpac, Kenwood Cup and Rolex Maxi series.
