Champaign, Illinois, USA. 2009.5.15 - Wolfram|Alpha was launched today with a live online videocast from Wolfram Research in Champaign, Illinois. Wolfram|Alpha is an online computational tool of immense scope and complexity.

Wolfram|Alpha is an ambitious, long-term project to make as much of the world's knowledge as possible computable, and accessible to everyone. Plain English searches on issues in an extensive range of physical subjects can be conducted with immediate and detailed results. The data is derived from global sources and managed by two supercomputers.

Although this may initially be regarded as just another website, Wolfram|Alpha has the capacity to become as pivotal to online search as Google and Wikipedia have become. The extraction of vast amounts of information from a plethora of databases, and the computational ability to convert this data into detailed answers to online questions, is ground breaking.

Founded by Stephen Wolfram in 1987, Wolfram Research is one of the world's most respected software companies, and a powerhouse of scientific and technical innovation.

Stephen Wolfram is a distinguished scientist, inventor, author, and business leader. He is the creator of Mathematica, the author of A New Kind of Science, the creator of Wolfram|Alpha, and the founder and CEO of Wolfram Research. His career has been characterized by a sequence of original and significant achievements.

Wolfram was born in London, educated at Eton, Oxford, and Caltech, and received his PhD in theoretical physics by the age of 20. After work in high-energy physics, quantum field theory, and cosmology, Wolfram rapidly became a leader in the emerging field of scientific computing, and in 1979 he began the construction of the first modern computer algebra system. Through the mid-1980s, Wolfram continued his work on complexity, After a highly successful career in academia - at Caltech, Princeton, and the University of Illinois, Wolfram began the development of Mathematica which was hailed as a major advance in computing.

After more than ten years of highly concentrated work, Wolfram described his achievements in his 1200-page book A New Kind of Science. Released on May 14, 2002, the book was widely acclaimed.
