Reston, VA, USA. 2009.9.28 - Google sites in the USA, surpass 10 billion video views in one month, (99% of those on YouTube). YouTube is now ranked as the 2nd most popular search engine!

comScore, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCOR), a leader in measuring the digital world, released August 2009 data from the comScore Video Metrix service today, showing that 161 million U.S. Internet users watched online video during the month, the largest audience ever recorded.

The average video viewer watched nearly 10 hours of online video during the month of August. The average duration of the online videos viewed was 3'42".

This is a long way from the early days of the World Wide Web, when most computers did not even have speakers! Andrew W Morse, founder of Digital Tsunami, has been proselytising about online video since 1996, when he leveraged a long history in film production into integrating online video.

Over that time, online videos have progressively increased in dimensions and resolution, corresponding to the increase in common business and household bandwidth. In 1996, the videos were little more than 'postage stamp' size and relatively 'grainy'. Digital Tsunami now delivers videos of 640 x 320 pixels and of a quality which reflects their HD origins.

Online video reached another all-time high in August with more than 25 billion videos viewed during the month, with Google Sites accounting for more than 10 billion. Online video was defined as both streaming and progressive download video. Rankings based on video content sites, and excluded video server networks.

In a presentation on August 19, comscore revealed that U.S. online video viewership in June 2009, had grown to more than 50% of the total population (157 million, up from 136 million in June 2008). Videos watched had increased from 79 to 124 per viewer.

Google sites continued to rank as the top U.S. video property in August, representing 40 percent of all videos viewed online.

Other notable findings from August 2009 include: The range of the demographics of viewers are illustrated by the subjects of some of the top ten (non-branded) referring terms: "New Moon" trailer (teens and 20 somethings), Poptropica (pre-teens), and top education industry video searches: 'How to send videos' and 'Pelvic Floor exam'.

As online users on YouTube, Yahoo and Google, search for videos by topic, SEO of the originating sites is vastly enhanced by keywords associated with the videos.

Digital Tsunami is currently developing a healthcare and medical website in which video is the primary media for information delivery.

Morse has produced film and video for Mercedes-Benz, Merck Sharp Dohme, Coca-Cola, Citizen and Fujitsu. He co-ordinated the first High Definition commercial shoot in Australia for Sony, Canon and Imagica in 1989.
