Manila, Philippines. 2009.12.18 - Leighton Asia Limited has been awarded the contract to construct the "Green" Zuellig Building in Makati City, Philippines.

The building has achieved Gold Level precertification for Core & Shell Development under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED); the first to achieve this standard in the Philippines. LEED is a rating system for green buildings established by the US Green Building Council to guide developers, architects, engineers and the construction industry towards sustainable design. Once completed, it aims to be the first Gold Level, Core & Shell building in Manila.

To be LEED-certified means the building must undertake a specific set of processes during every phase of the project. Any building can be referred to as 'green', but LEED certification gives developers undisputed credibility worldwide.

The Zuellig Building, is a 33 level office tower (66,000 square metres) to be erected on the prime development site on the corner of Makati Avenue and Paseo de Roxas Street, in the heart of the Makati Central Business District. As a LEED Gold building, it will offer tenants operational cost savings and a healthier indoor environment.

Low-flow plumbing fixtures and water recycling initiatives will cut water consumption by 40%; energy-efficient building and office systems, as well as lights that automatically turn off when rooms are unoccupied, reduce energy consumption by at least 15.8 %; and finishes and construction materials will meet stringent criteria for indoor air quality. The unique curtain wall design which uses the latest glass technology will allow daylight into 90% of interior spaces while reducing cooling requirements significantly.

The contract was awarded by Bridgebury Realty Corp, a division of the Zuellig Group, which operated in the Philippines since early last century. Hamish Tyrwhitt, Leighton Asia's managing director said, "Leighton Asia is pleased to work with the Zuellig Group. We have a strong commitment to the Philippines and this project gives diversity in our Philippines operations".

Contract works will commence in January 2010 with completion scheduled for the third quarter of 2011.
